The secret of all triumphs is perseverance!
-Rat

If Rat has scurried across your path;

If Rat has scurried across your path you are being asked to assert yourself in new areas that you have not yet explored. Perhaps it’s time to take up those new hobbies, challenge yourself by learning something new or simply taking the uncertain first steps towards your dreams. Rat is letting you know it’s time for “new beginnings” and change.

Alternatively you are being asked to evaluate the clutter around you. Is it time to purge old baggage and feelings that no longer serve you? Time for a spring cleaning. Sell or giveaway all the physical things that are just filling up the space around you. In doing this you will often symbolically begin to clear old emotional issues and cluttered thinking. Allow yourself to feel as you purge. This cleansing act will make space for the new things to come.

If Rat is your Animal Totem;

You are easy going and happy. You are a social animal as well as disarmingly honest, frank and easy to get along with. You are highly co-operative with others in joint endeavors. You have a tendency to wear your heart on your sleeve – however you are also able to maintain self control. You have the gift of foresight and know how to use it successfully for your own benefit. You are cunning and shrewd in business and are unafraid to defend yourself in any situation. You love a good challenge so that you can vanquish another obstacle. You are a wise adviser to your associates and you teach others to appreciate all the things around us.

If Rat has come into your Dream;

A Rat in your dream can be symbolic of many different things and it is wise to further research this aspect. To see many rats in your dream signifies the need for immersing yourself in social activities in your waking life. You have become just a bit too reclusive and have hidden yourself from others for too long. To see a white rat in your dreams is a symbol of strength, adaptability and abundance. You dream is letting you know that things are progressing toward fruition and that your dreams are not far from materializing.

  • I had a very long dream, I cannot recall all of the details but basically a VERY large, white rat (didn’t have red eyes, had blackish eyes) came up to me from our woods. I was not scared, nor did it appear to be. I immediately got down on the ground to be on the same level and it cuddled me and I would pet it and we became fast friends and allies, it was my companion rat. Fast forward in the dream and i am walking when all of a sudden a large group of angry and violent men try to attack me. My rat pal and I managed to get into a one room shack type structure where I was able to barricade the door. In the end the men broke through and my rat pet and I fought a few and managed to get away. Basically in the dream my rat saved me. After that I took him home and he was super loving and through the dream, even when we were under attack I felt positive, I knew that I was dreaming and I knew it was a good dream. I still feel positive and well and I keep thinking about that very large white rat and I miss it.

  • I just had a dream (first time Rat dreamer) that I had a big pet rat. Dark colored. Dark gray? . I was proud of him and he was trained so well. He loved to run so I made sure to let him get his energy out before putting in his big dog like crate. I picked him up to take him to show my male cousins (the rat now is small enough to carry and not big dog like at this point in dream), and both my cousins who I grew up with was not interested in seeing my pet rat. They seemed turned off somewhat and walked backwards or away. I was bummed. I loved my rat and named him Alexander. Odd

  • A white flying rat came to my dreams what does it symbolize??

  • I had the same dream over and over. We have just moved or are moving. The house is infested with rats. They are in the walls. Every minute another leaves the walls and wanders around. They get on the bed, run around. My dogs chase them and I am always worried they are going to fight. Sometimes they climb on me or launch themselves at me. I am actually very afraid of rodents, but I understand that some Totems bring fear because of lack of understanding. Are they really one my totem or just something else?

  • I’ve been sitting in my house watching TV with my kid for most of my day today, it’s my weekend so I’m relaxing my first day, so anyways; all throughout the day I’ve been hearing these banging and crashing sounds outside I thought nothing of it just thought it was my neighbors cause I heard them outside not to long before like each time.. so I left to go do something and came back and was sitting outside smoking and I heard this ticking sound on my storage room door and I’m like what the heck is that my kid is inside sleeping, I’m like okay.. so I open the door and see a bunch of my boxes knocked over I’m like okay.. that explains the multiple crashes all day but doesn’t explain the tapping sound I’m looking around and think that sound sounded like this chain I look up there is a GIANT RAT on the doors frame!!! I’m like oh my god how do I get this thing out without killing it!?
Then I think what message is this little creature trying to pass to me!?
I’ve been thinking a lot about finding some hobbies just haven’t actually done anything.. now I know to really put some effort into it.

  • I had a dream that the man my friend married to is a rat in human form, but my friend didn’t see him like that.

  • I have a strange dream. I was taking pictures then my grandma told me, I should learn how to cut without killing it.” She gave a rat’s leg cut but still moving. My grandfather was there to keep me calm but I was too scared and disgust of what I saw that I put it back.I repeat the word my grandma told me. What is even more strange, a girl has a dream that almost connects to mine. She was dreaming of being tied up. Someone tied her legs and hands, and cut of her leg. I heard her talking about her dream because I was eaves dropping.

  • I kept rats as pets for more than half of my life, so maybe my re-occuring dreams might be influenced by this and the fact that I do not have rats around me anymore, but still I find the dreams strange enough, and yet I could not find any interpretation, so I decided to try it this way:

Those dreams, while they vary in location, usually begin with me clearing up a room, a closet or a wardrobe; sometimes I look for something, but mostly it feels (and looks) rather like the “annual spring-cleaning”. I open a cabinet or drawer or move a piece of furniture – and then suddenly a (fancy) rat appears. Sometimes it’s a male rat, sometimes a female one, but I always know this rat, because in this dream I recognise it as one of my pets. I reach for him/her , and he/she climbs happily onto my hand. It feels like I have found this rat again, although I lost him/ her many, many years ago, and it’s a miracle that the rat is still alive (and young looking), although the rat must have been living for 8-10 years since I saw her last. I feel a great relief washing over me, and a great joy, upon realising that I found this rat again and that he/she was there the whole time. Then usually the dream ends.

A strange, but important thing also seems to be that those rats CANNOT be one of my pet-rats who went over the Rainbow-Bridge years ago. They usually are colored like no fancy rat can be colored (usually they are ginger-red with white patches, almost like a Paint Horse) – and they have horns. Mostly common are ram’s horns, but once or two times they had the antlers of a stag as well. I feel that those horns have to have some significance – after all they would not be in my dreams…. but I don’t know what it could mean.

Maybe somebody can help me out?

  • Hi,

I had a dream which is really disturbing my mind, I can’t get over it and I would like someone to please try to tell me what it may represent.
So, I dreamed about having a brown Rat in my blazer pocket that I was wearing . In a meanwhile, I was chasing a bruin dog out of the house to go outside, and I was so frustrated by the fact that the dog didn’t want to get out. And I had someone, which he looked like my boyfriend, telling me to leave the dog alone, but for me, I was really upset by the dog and I wanted it a way.
And then, the dog started being aggressive too and bucking at me. So finally, I let the dog stay at the porch of the house and I closed it away from where I was, which looked like in the sitting room.
Nevertheless, when I went back to look at the Rat in my pocket, I couldn’t find it, it was gone!!!
Please tell me what this means. Normally I love Dogs and I grew up with dogs and had own two dogs. I don’t know why I was so upset with it and I love animals so much but I have never considered having a Rat as a pet.

    Thanks,
    Moza

    • Here is my personal interpretation of your dream:
The dog in your dream represents an unresolved issue in your life. The issue is something that causes you loss. For example, I think the rat symobolizes something that you were comfortable with. You had it “with” you. It was a “success” or a person in your life that you wanted to keep “with” you, alongside you. You had it close to you… in your pocket. But then the dog, an issue came up. In the dream you tried to get rid of the issue/problem and deal with it but it would not go away. You then lost the rat, the thing that symobolized something you held close, because you allowed the dog to stay, you allowed an unresolved problem or issue to remain in your life causing you to lose something you somewhat valued or that comforted you. The “old boyfriend figure” represents a person in your life or a way of thinking that persuades you to continue to not deal with this issue. They keep giving you the wrong advice. Is there someone who your are listening to who is not being supportive in allowing you to deal with an issue, addiction or person in the way that you need to deal with it? I think God is trying to tell you deal with this issue, whatever it is, because you are losing things because of it. Perhaps relationships, jobs or material things are being lost. It is causing you pain and keeping you from some kind of healing. The old boyfriend figure in your dream is a person who does not want to see you free from your issue. Perhaps they have a hidden agenda. Perhaps they have control or power issues. They aren’t a bad person, they just aren’t supportive. But there is the “dog” that is holding you back and only you can get rid of the dog. It may be good to get a professional counselor to help you if you can, a person who is not biased and can help you with the specific situation and support you going forward. I hope this helps. I am not a professional counselor. I have had an interest in dream interpretations for many years and feel that it is a gift given to me by God to help others.

    • Moza, the dog is a symbol of someone you love, however, someone very sneaky as a rat would try to put you against the person you love and you would turn against him/her but that person really cares for you so they would not leave you. When you realize you will find out y that the r a t was trying to keep you away from y our blessing. Be careful who you bring in to your life or house.

    • You will relocate if you already haven’t done so: a small financial gain, a false lover or friend, this person will do anything to bring you misery, sadness, and hurt and damages: even grief, troubles with the law, possibly neighbors or coworkers: false friendship, gossiper, infidelity: unfaithful lover / friend

  • I dreamt that a white rat went into my daughter’s bedroom..the door was closed and it crawled under the door..what could that mean?

  • I think I have dreamt of the rat on two occasions. The most recent one was probably two nights ago. I was either opening a sliding door or standing beside an opened sliding door and as I was able to step through the door, A Rat (dark brown or black) popped its head, as though hiding behind the sliding door. It was eye level with me, the snout was long. My view was the long snout and two beady eyes. When I saw it, it was unexpected. I jumped out of my sleep (literally), my eyes flew open and my body reacted the way I did in the dream. For the first few seconds, I could not discern if it was dream or it happened now, like both my realities were blurred.

I never really felt positively about rats. I don’t think it was going to attack me, but it was unexpected (probably too close), and I did not like that.

    • I dreamt something similar to your dream….the rest in my dream was black…i would like to know the meaning.could you please let me know if you out…..thank you

  • hello

yesterday i ran outside in the morning to get the trash out for the pickup. i came back in the house, closing the door behind me. it is possible the door lock did not catch but the door was closed maybe just noth tightly. An hour later, i walked by the door area and something had come in the house, left the door ajar, and there was a rat carcass – blonf fur still on the hind area. only some exposed back leg tendons, fur, entrails and half the tail were left. it was still moist as if just eaten. i have 4 cats and there is no way they killed and ate that big of a rat without my knowing it. we have rats here in the northwwest, but it is my first encounter since i just moved to this house that i am renting for a short time.

what brought the carcass in? it was very odd, like a vanish, and happened quickly.

    thank you

I had a dream about a bunch of rats in a box just moving around a fast pace no storyline behind it i wasnt in a certain place they were just in a big box moving fast what does my dream mean Thank You.

  • I have not had a dream of a rat but have seen rat symbolism for about a week now, lots of random programmes with rats in them, books, random pictures I wouldn’t usually notice, it is always one lone black rat…

  • I’m a little confused.
My dream was vivid and realistic. In it I was upstairs in bed at someone’s cottage when I woke up with a large dog sized rat on top of me about to bite me.
In this dream I grabbed the rat around the neck and killed it then went back to bed only to find fecal dropping of more rats but none were seen.
    I then woke up.
Can anyone help decipher this dream?

    • Hi i also saw a huge brown rat as big as a dog in my dream. It was standing beside my bed and also wanted to bite me. I woke up and nothing. Have you found an awnser yet?

  • Hello I hope someone can help me. I’m very aware of animals being messengers in my life and always heed their lessons. I’ve lived in my current home for 8 years, all of a sudden I have had a rat get into my home. It’s been the scariest experience, I’ve seen only evidence of them but never seen one only heard and seen paw prints/tail marks. I know it’s a rat as I got a professional in. However, the weirder thing is I keep seeing the word even when I didn’t know what was getting in and everywhere I go on TV, in conversation,, reading, I keep seeing the word. I just turned the TV on and there it was again. I’m scared in my own home but also realise there must be a higher reason. It’s made me clear the house of things I don’t need but not fully yet and I wonder if the energy is still around to remind me to keep getting rid of the old. I was told its a sign of transformation. Any advice would be so gratefully received. Thank you x x

    • I am going through a very simiiar experience as yourself ,am petrified by them but only when in my garden or house …If I encounter a rat / mr. rattus outside my living space I admire them ,their bright eyes ,shiny coat, their ingenuity. I love to watch them eat using their wee hands that almost look human..Again only from a distance.. I have had several panic states over my life and a rat has been in my life in one way or another during these times ..The page above has clarified a lot to me today and your comment resonated with how I’m feeling.Hope things have improved for you.

  • I have a dream in which there were two huge white rats. Larger than cats. At first I was repulsed but then I noticed they were very clean and tame. I then decided to get on and keep it for a pet and put it on a leash to take walks. Any ideas?

  • I woke up past midnight and find 3 rats in the trap. Trying to kill them, one refuses to die for 15 minutes. In the morning I find that another rat has added there and parts of two of those rats have been eaten. The two have had some parts removed in them.

Yesterday night, I sleep and wake up from my dream because a fat rat was eating my hair in real life not a dream.

  • I dreamt saw million of rat coming after me i was surround by dem and was hitting Them and calling for help… Them they disappesr. What this dream meant..

  • I was visiting a friend who had psychic abilities and she was sharing a few of her “insights” with me- the (her) families pet rat kept crawling up my arm- (I was trying to be polite about this and not freak out) anyway she told me “he never likes anyone who comes over – I can’t believe he likes you!) she even had tears in her eyes! What the heck is the meaning of this?????? It really creeped me out.

  • hi. I was dreaming about a pidgeon and woke up to find a grey and brown rat on my bed in the morning. It just stared inocently at me before I threw it after being startled. What does this mean?

  • I had a dream that me and my husband were talking in our home when suddenly a large amount of water started leaking down the walls from the roof. A roofer looked at the problem while my husband went outside. The roofer said the problem was roof rats, a lot of them. I didn’t actually see any rats in the dream myself but being told the cause was roof rats seemed significant. Thoughts on what this could mean? Thank you!

  • Hi…mousses are constantly near me.
    I know I live in the country but… :/

If I am with my chickens…they appear taking food near me..or in front of me.
If they get in the house, the only room they go…is on mine. And I changed rooms already…more than once :/
When I am painting(though my tiles paints are real poison), they go in there…with no respect for me at all.

The thing is…we we catch them…we leave them on further country, we don’t kill them πŸ™‚

Well…thought once my spiritual guide was an owl(because I had an owl as a friend, used to bring me food ansd clean my hair hihihi)…then thought it was dragonflies, they are around me, and land near me :/ πŸ˜€

But…now I remember(as I have new visitors in my work space again)that probably it is the mouse.

    How may I know?

    Kind regards
    Teresa

    • Hello Teresa: Different animals come to us at different times in our lives as spirit guides. When they make their presence known constantly – make an effort to learn and integrate as much of their wisdom as you can. We can also have more than one totem at a time. Also check out our Mouse page and pay attention to the quotation box at the top of the page. The message will be specific to you.

  • Hi…last night I had a dream that there were hundreds of rats in my attic…they were squealing and screetching and I went up thete to see what wad going on…water had got into the attic and they were trying to get out…They started to jump on me and attack me…I tried to escape but there were too many and I started to shout out for help…then I woke up…what could this mean ? I have dreamt of a rat before..one was sitting on my bed and the next day I got a puncture while driving…I accepted the rat as a helpful guide…there to warn me….but now I dont know what to think…because these rats attacked me….any advice would be very welcome…

    • Hello Carolynn: Your dream is symbolic of emotional immaturity. I am thinking that you are currently or currently will be involved in a fairly bitter drama amongst your peers. Everyone is responding with venom rather than taking the time to fully understand each other with compassion and love to a situation. Judging others is never the correct path – no matter what has happened.

      • Wow…thanks for that reply…that really gives me something to think about…..ja….it is ringing a bit true…a bit too true for my liking

    • Hi Carolynn,

If this were my dream, I’ve got lots of distractions and thoughts on my mind and have been ignoring my spirituality. I need to ask for help in this area, perhaps from my guides.

Our waking life is also symbolic and filled with metaphors: our cars represent our selves, how we get around in the world. Getting a tire puncture might indicate something about delays I’m having in some aspect of my life. (For some reason I’m sensing a delay in the career area?).

If I had a dream of a rat sitting on my bed, I might ask myself “Am I comfortable with expressing my intelligence to the world?” Maybe the rat is indicating that I’m becoming ready to do that.

  • I saw the silhouette of a rat during an acupuncture treatment. Thoughts thank you great site

  • hello… please tell me what it means when the house i rent has lots of rats living in the roof?

    • Hello Kim: The message is very clear – assert yourself with the landlord to make sure he takes steps to remove them from your roof. Find an advocacy group to help you – use the media. Do what you can to bring every ones attention to the problem so that it can be resolved. Rat as a messenger would be spotting one outside or on your travels. Rats as a major life lesson would be a full blown infestation.

  • How do I find my totem animal please?

  • Hello.. Greetings to you.. I just wana reply on issue on a rat that I accidently ran over while driving after midnight.. What’s a reason behind it..
    Thank you..

    • Hello Mark:
The message in this case is that you have to recognize that someone is manipulating you and controlling you in some way. They are using a passive aggressive way of doing this – in other words making you feel guilty. You need to take a hold of the situation and move on.
