Otter Meaning and Messages
In this case, Otter symbolism is insisting that you take the time to allow yourself the freedom and comfort of relaxing. Thus you need to let go of all your daily concerns. The power of the Otter meaning, like the Cardinal and the Elephant, is in the knowledge that you have to take care of yourself first to be of use to others. Therefore, this spirit animal insists that you go with the natural flow, ebbs, and tides of your life. Only then can you find joy and wonder in the small things that give you pleasure as an adult, and that gave you gratification as a child.
Alternatively, the Otter symbolism, like the Dog, could be reminding you that universal acceptance of “what is” in your life is the only way for you to move forward. This form of embracing the good with the bad and seeking out the joy of the moment will manifest new freedom of love and acceptance. Furthermore, you must honor the right of everything and everyone to be as they are. In other words, merely allow things to unfold in your life.
Occasionally, this animal is here to remind you that you need to rekindle lost relationships in a playful and upbeat manner.
Sea Otter Symbolism

I saw in dream two otters kissing each other and were very happy with each other. I don’t know the meaning of it
What would the meaning of seeing an otter get hit by a vehicle I don’t know if it died and there was nothing I could do to stop it from happening I ran out and didn’t know what to do it ran in three circles then ran into the bush I just don’t understand why it was trying to run across the road ware people. Makes no sense
The other night I ran over a river otter in my car and killed it. I felt really horrible. I braked hard and swerved to try to avoid it but there was not enough time to react. I got out of my car and gently dragged the now dead otter over into the grass and said a little prayer and sang one of the Native songs I know for expressing gratitude for that beautiful creature’s life. I wish I could have skinned it and honored by using the fur for a Medicine bag or something but unfortunately circumstances prevented that. Usually when an animal comes to me, it’s trying to give me some message and since this one gave it’s life, I figured it must be an important one. I have a pretty major difficult situation going on in my life so I think I may know a little what it might have been trying to tell me, but I thought I would put it out here and see what comes back. Thanks.
Since the otter represents allowing yourself the freedom to relax and curiosity, perhaps you are unable to slow down in life for these qualities. Just as rushing down through the road might have caused this accident, perhaps it symbolizes how you are unable to find the answers you seek through pushing and pushing hard. Perhaps you just need to let go, relax for some time, and explore the questions you have in life.
Instead of focusing on action without understanding much of the situation in the first place, perhaps take the time to ask all the questions you want and get answers on that first. Write a list of questions you want answered for example, and include it even if you don’t think asking a question will go to anywhere. Whatever you are curious about it, include the questions, even if it doesn’t seem entirely useful to the situation at first.
Explore the situation and problem with your curiosity first. Examine all the details, and make sense of all your confusions first. Then you can figure out the answers to your problems.
I dreamt of being in a not so well lit room, sitting with my in laws and a couple whom I don’t know. We are discussing about a phone. I’m very enthusiastic about the topic. However my in laws don’t seem too pleased. Our room has a huge wall size window. We are all probably out for a vacation. All of us talk how the vacation is ending and we haven’t seen anything around. Suddenly I see a huge wave approaching us. Till now everything is in black and white. Suddenly I see something blue and I feel it’s a small whale. But I yell it’s a blue otter. However, when it gets closer it’s actually a sky blue dolphin. We try to take pictures but probably I’m the one who has spotted it yet and other’s are too slow to react. Also my mother’s phone camera is not working.
I’m fine with everything however I don’t understand why would I call it a blue otter when I have never before in my entire life heard of that word or seen it.
I feel like this represents that whatever you see is a false misconception of something that is just fun, relaxing or a great way to have a break as the otter represents. A blue otter not existing might mean that you’re being led to believe that something is more rewarding for you from the pressure, but is actually something else. Learn to look within if you feel you are being pressured to relax to the point of irresponsibility.
Pls adv the meaning if one dreams of a hill covered with dead otters? Thank you.
I get the sense that this means that you are no longer able to focus on what is fun, relaxing or exciting to you in life anymore. Growing up with responsibilities doesn’t mean you no longer get to have any time for a break or to simply enjoy spending time by yourself or with loved ones. You need to remember there is more to life than just work and material success.
Otter, Tawí:ne, visits us again and reminds us to play. It is when we are at play that we are most alive. This is knowledge that every child has, which we forget more and more as we become adults. With each passing year we can become more and more cautious and and less and less curious about the world. Our bodies cannot help but grow old, but as they do, our fear of pain and injury leads us to grow old in our minds and in our hearts as well. Watch an old person try to sit down. They are not limited only by their bodies. They are limited by their need to check everywhere before they sit down. We never lose our ability to play. We lose our willingness and our courage to play. Tawí:ne reminds us that the real fountain of youth is play. Play requires the willingness to make a fool of yourself, to be seen as Child-ish. It is not that Tawí:ne never works. It is that Tawí:ne knows how to turn even work into a form of play. Otter knows that there must be a time in our life to play just as there is a time to be serious, a time to laugh, and a time to be careful. But few of us need to be more careful or need to take the world more seriously than we already do. Few of us need to be more old than we have already become.
Beautiful, thank you.
“Blessed is he that retains some of his childhood. To retain all of it is madness. To retain none of it is death.”
Hindu Saying
Otter, Tawí:ne, speaks of letting go of control. Otter loves to play. So do we. Play is how we learn most deeply. Play is how we find joy. But play requires that we be willing to make fools of ourselves and perhaps fail. Play is dangerous. Play requires a suspension of fear. We do not forget how to play. We stop playing because play frightens us. We stop playing because we are so afraid of letting go of control. If we have children or animals in our life, we are asked to play every day. Tawí:ne invites us to let go of control for a moment or two and to play, the way that we did as children. The way that Otter does every single day. I will accept the invitation today. Will you?
As I was going for a run this morning, four otters ran to the middle of the road I was on. They stopped and looked at me and then turned back to the swampy area that they came from.
I googled the meaning of this and came to this site. After reading the description and your comment – I assume that I am to take time to play?
Have also been “visited” by several of my relatives, and others, over the course of the last few days
who have crossed over. Is there a connection in your opinion?
I dreamt an otter swam to me and wanted me to pick him up, I did and he hugged me and didn’t want me to put him down he just kept hanging on to me with a hug…so cute!
Otter, Tawí:ne, has always spoken to me of playfulness and of being in the moment, of accept the way things are, not worrying about the way they were, or the way they might become, which I cannot know for certain. I have a special close feeling for Tawí:ne because of my very close relationship with her cousins, ferrets, and especially my one great love, whose name was Mookie.
I am sending out a special prayer and a smudge tonight for a friend and her mother, who has just passed. A’ho. And may Skennen’kó:wa, the Great Peace find you.
Tawí:ne, Otter speaks of letting go of control. But she also speaks of freedom, parenting and memory. She may speak of different things to you…
Saw otter for first time at a lake I spend a great deal of time at past four years. Holy Spirit sent him. I am not good at enjoying and /or not taking care of. Out of work on comp right now… So would normally not been at lake at this time. Thanks for the insight….Holy Spirit, otter and this great site.
I had a really interesting dream of an otter that was part of my household…. I took him in my car to the ocean so we could both swim. We were diving and then floating on the water, when we were going back to my car a park ranger told me that he was taking him to a sanctuary and put him in a cage. I started crying and woke up..
I had a dream where an otter came into my apartment and cuddled me at night, and left in the morning. This cute little otter would open the window and come inside open my bedroom door and jump into bed cuddle and sleep next to me. I told him when I saw him sneaking inside that he can’t leave the window open because it’s cold, so he closed the window behind him. I woke up in the happiest mood ever. Is the otter my totem?
I had a dream that a otter wrapped around me hard and wouldnt let go what does this mean? It scared me.
playful hugs…. you are loved
thats deep bruh from big dad. the otter holds me, hard at nighttt. Every night bruh.
I found this website while searching for the meaning of animals in your dreams. Hopefully someone can help me. Last night I dreamt that my daughter was playing with friends outside when I heard another parent yell “Copperhead! Kayla get away! ” When I got to where I could see my daughter she was on top of an old metal shed with a hole in its roof laying on her belly like children would do when listening to a story. Right in front of her was a large, long blakish-silvery snake hanging from the tree above. It just stayed there looking right at her, unmoved. I yelled out to her to step away and come to me but she didn’t move . I was afraid that if I got any closer it would still bite her. Then some how she fell into the hole and the snake began to fall behind her. I wailed out and tried to run as fast as I could but I wasn’t getting anywhere. When I looked back up at the shed there was another animal in there. It looked like an otter to me. I somehow knew it’s name but I can’t remember what it was now. I was suddenly afraid for it as well. I yelled out to it and it just stared at me like it wasn’t afraid. The snake reeled back to strike and it bit into the otter. It didn’t flinch, still had it’s eyes focused on me. The snake bit it again and again and it seemed as if the fur shined like metal. I remember hearing everyone say the animals name but it puzzles me that with everything I do remember in detail. I can’t remember that. When I tried to run to the shed again I woke up. 😥 I know this was long but I figured I shouldn’t leave a detail out if someone could interpret.
This dream say a a lot. First since the snake was watching your daughter not hurting says she is good, happy etc. Then the otter comes in stares directly at you saying these are the qualities I represent when then snake bites it the snake is showing you what things in your life you need to pay better attention to possibly for your daughters sake. Best of luck, hope this helps!
I had a dream I was being chased by a bunch of otters. Very symbolic in my waking life.
I had a dream with an otter. I walked up to this guy and he had a bunch of animals. They all loved me apparently but the snake and otter I remember stuck out or came towards me. The keeper said that animals love you, you just have to learn how to relax or they’ll be uneasy. Next thing you know, I was picking up a sea otter, and when I held him close to my chest, he smiled and it was the most joyous moment. Then a anaconda started to slither my way but I was reminded to be calm. All in all, it was a good dream, even tho I was trying to escape vampires (watched Twilight). Can you tell me what this means ?
I had a guided experience and found my animal to be the otter. however the otter was heavy with child. what ever could this mean?
It could be birthing of creative energy, this is great, the creative paths are opening to you, tap into your divine feminine side,…or do you subconsciously want family? It could mean you are more ready than you know. Otter is a playful messenger. Have fun with it. 😛 I am otter too!
When I went outside my house,2 crows sat in front of compound wall and started crawing., continuously..they came wherever I went…what they wanted to convey..is it s good sign or bad
Good!! as birds are supposed messengers from great spirit. The show up when you are in a good place, or when it is a sign to get into a good space. Crows are no different. The bridge the gap between physical and spirit.
I dreamed of falling into an otter pool, then a whole group of otters helped me out by carrying me up to the edge to prevent me from drowning. Does anyone have any insight into what this may mean?
Sounds like you have lots of great friends or a suppory network around you. Nice one!☺

Just found this and got information of the other.Been told before the other is my animal totem.Thank yoi
Thank you for all of the information here. I had a dream about a sea otter that was wounded. It came onto my kayak and crawled into my lap. It allowed me to apply pressure to the wound and hold it until help arrived. It was calm and peaceful in my arms, but would get upset when anyone tried to take it from me. What does it mean when a wounded animal presents itself to you in a dream?
I saw an otter up at my parents’ lake house, and it was the first time we’d ever seen one there. I was on a much-needed vacation, and I felt much better after having a little chat with him!
Wonderful experience today watching a large otter tumbling and playing in a river here on the west coast of Ireland. Immediately made me want to bring joy and creativity back into my life so your description sounds spot on!thank you
😮 😮 😮 😮 😮 😮 😮 😮 😮 😮
One of my spirit names I have to say the resemblance is uncanny 🙂
Thanks so much for this website its very helpful
I saw woods, and an otter in meditation, and decided to look it up. Its was right on point!
Thank you for this lovely informative website. I have accessed it via a kindel fire, so maybe this is the reason I have had some minor problems working with your web page. For example, when I attempt to enter an animal in the search box, as soon as I click on the box, I am knocked out of it, before I had time to type.in one letter. Also the far right of the screen out of range / cannot access/read the info. Thanks. PS had an otter come into my dreams and was reminded of that while watching a short video (about an unrelated subject) and again, later that same day watching a news show. I’ve heard that when you get a message 3 times in one day that you have received confirmation from spirit 🙂
